Weekends are great opportunity for us to pamper ourselves from being drowned in the corporate cauldron. Finding a remedy to cure stress is very important especially when you become less efficient, less excited and feels negative about your job. Excessive prolonged stress causes burnout.
WHO International Classification of Diseases 11th Revision describes burnout as:
“a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions:
- feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;
- increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one’s job; and
- reduced professional efficacy.
Burn-out refers specifically to phenomena in the occupational context and should not be applied to describe experiences in other areas of life.”
Experts have suggested many ways on how to manage burnout. From taking a break to reflecting from what you do. I myself have experienced burnout and whenever my stress center turns the warning light on, I cure myself from corporate overdose with these simple stress release.
1. Call a Timeout!
If burnout starts to creep in your system, you have to call a timeout to rest and recharge. Take a short break and disconnect from your work for a while. Have a short walk in the park or drive to the countryside and indulge in the beauty of nature, let the beautiful scenery cure you from work overdose.
When everything is under control, the introduction of an external or foreign element, which may cause disturbance to our system in balance, is what causes fear on trying something new.
Staying in the ‘balance’ is good, but staying in that comfort zone for too long, doing what is easy and playing safe will not thrust you to your full potential, you will never discover who you truly are.
When work life gets boring and stressful, explore something new, it will give you a new perspective. It will help you understand the value of life.
3. The inner child in you.
The moment burnout creeps inside your system, the creative, energetic, fun and motivated child in you slowly dies, and once you lose your inner child, life will never be as fun as it should be.
For a little child, life is simple. He becomes happy and contented by what he has; he believes that everything is possible and fun is always probable. He is living in the present moment and he always believe that tomorrow will be better than today.
Our adult professional life is very stressful. One way to restore your work energy is to treat the inner child in you. Live like a child once more. Feed your creativity, refill your energy and recharge your motivation in life. Learn to embrace simplicity and you will suddenly realize that the things you have today are the things you dreamed about yesterday.

A good amount of stress is beneficial as it pushes us to our full potential, but so much of it is dangerous. Prolonged excessive stress burns us out; it snatches away our motivation and work energy. It is therefore important for us to know how to pace ourselves and find a way to recover from corporate overdose.
If you are low on energy and high on stress, remember that the juanderful world out there is waiting for you. Take a break, discover new perspective and make the inner child in you happy again.
